Each book in this limited edition set of six books represents the unique perspective of an internationally acclaimed architect for the San Jose sustainability renewal initiative. Custom printed linen covers and the individually unique layout design of each book expresses not only the innovative architecture but the spirit and harmony created by its respect for Nature. The collection is an anthology of beauty and purpose in design.
The Arbor pays homage to the unique geology of the Santa Clara Valley region that once made it a verdant habitat. By blurring the line between nature and workspace, Studio Gang’s project will reintroduce green space into the urban environment. The Arbor invites nature back into the city of San Jose, a valley with a rich history of biodiversity.
The Arbor has been designed to restore green space and natural systems and reintegrate them into the working environment. Conceptualized to increase the inhabitants connection with nature, the structure is composed of a series of modular arbours that create a terraced framework. The architecture is distinctive, with a wood screen facade that creates ideal natural light conditions inside the building and provides ideal growth conditions for greenery. The modular angled screens, a defining architectural feature, are echoed in the project logo and blind debossed into the end pages.
The ecology of the Santa Clara Valley has fostered an abundance of life since its formation in the Cenozoic era. Water, clay and rock merged together to create a rich soil that generously nurtured the trees, giving way to lush orchards. This earthborn colour, rich with history, is a palette of peach and rose-hued minerals, inspiring the birth of flowering summer groves. The earth inspired palette is featured prominently throughout the book from its linen wrap to the interior pages—a powerful symbol of the fertile foundation San Jose is built upon and harmonious balance with nature it seeks to restore.
